Basic Supplies You’ll Need for a New Pointer Puppy
Of course you’ll need to buy some nutritious puppy food – that goes without saying. But beyond that, you’ll also need some basic supplies to keep your new Pointer pup both happy and healthy.

It’s hard to think of anything more exciting for a dog lover or a family with kids than the day you’re bringing home a new Pointer puppy. But, it’s important for you, your family and your home to all be prepared for your new family member. Thorough preparation will make his arrival easier and safer for everyone, including your new puppy.
I bet you never thought you’d hear the words “unhappy” and “Pointer” used together. I didn’t either, and I’ve been around Pointers for a lot of years. My own Pointer, a certified therapy dog, is always happier than a lark. Of course, my family and I give him plenty of love, and he gets all that attention from the people he visits in nursing homes, hospitals and the other facilities.
Your Pointer is probably not overweight – in fact, there’s a great chance that your Pointer is just the right weight. If your dog is like a lot of Pointers, he’s a high-energy, active dog that pesters you for walks and other types of exercise. But, canine obesity is becoming very common, just like the “epidemic” of childhood obesity we’ve been hearing about. So, I thought I might write something quick about how you can tell whether your Pointer is overweight.
Naming a new puppy has always been a struggle. I have no imagination. But, I have managed to learn some tricks about teaching a new Pointer puppy his name. The goal is to teach him to give you his full attention as soon as you say his name. As you start training your Pointer to sit, stay and so forth, you’ll say his name followed by a verbal command. That’s why he needs to know and respond to his name.
In a separate post I wrote about the dangers of some of the dog toys that are being made in China. Some of these toys contain toxic substances that can cause some serious health problems for your Pointer. I decided that the best way for me to get around this potential problem was to make my own dog toys.
We’ve all been horrified by the succession of news reports and warnings about children’s toys that are made in China. Apparently, many of them contain toxic substances. So, have you ever wondered if any of your Pointer’s toys originally came from China? And if so, are Chinese-made dog toys safe for your Pointer?
If you want your Pointer to enjoy his time at the kennel as much as you enjoy your vacations, make sure it offers all the “basics” – cleanliness, safety and security, spaciousness, climate control, a trained staff and so on. But you should also look for some of these extra services.
Some of my customers board their dogs whenever they leave town and they’re old hands, but others have never done it before and I need to explain how things work when they first come in. If you’ve never boarded your Pointer before, you might not even know what to look for in a boarding kennel. I can help you with that.
You already know that Pointers are fairly sizeable dogs, and that they’re athletic, strong and active. What you might not know is just how well they get along with small dogs. And I’m not just talking about dogs that weigh 20 or 30 pounds. Nope, I mean Pointers get along just fine with even the tiniest dogs.
