What to Look for When You’re Boarding Your Pointer – The Doggy Spa

In a separate post, I talked about the things Pointer owners should always look for in “basic” dog boarding kennels they’re considering. But there’s another, more posh type of boarding kennel. These places like to refer to themselves as “doggy spas”, “dog vacation resorts” and the like. They offer all the “basics” I talked about separately, of course, but they also provide a number of additional services. Naturally, a “doggy spa” will cost more than a “basic” boarding kennel.

If you want your Pointer to enjoy his time at the kennel as much as you enjoy your vacations, make sure it offers all the “basics” – cleanliness, safety and security, spaciousness, climate control, a trained staff and so on. But you should also look for some of these extra services.

  • Piped-in music/television. Yes, dogs enjoy music (classical music seems to help keep them calm) and watch TV. Some boarding kennels pipe in music, and a few provide a TV in each dog run to keep the dogs entertained. A few even offer dog movie matinees, complete with couches and popcorn.
  • Elevated sleeping areas. Some boarding kennels provide a comfy, raised cot for your Pointer to sleep or lounge on. Many also provide soft beds, pillows and blankets.
  • Gourmet food and treats. Doggy spas often furnish high-quality, natural or even organic kibble and treats. Some even garnish the kibble with home-cooked recipes.
  • Planned activities. Nature walks, dips in a doggy swimming pool, aromatherapy, hot oil treatments (just like so many women enjoy), golf cart rides, treadmill jogs and one-on-one cuddle time are just some of the possibilities.
  • Extra-large dog runs and exercise areas. More room equals more fun.
