Homemade Toys for your Pointer

In a separate post I wrote about the dangers of some of the dog toys that are being made in China. Some of these toys contain toxic substances that can cause some serious health problems for your Pointer.

I decided that the best way for me to get around this potential problem was to make my own dog toys. That way my dog won’t be exposed to those dangerous toxins just by playing with his toys.

As it turns out, my Pointer loves his homemade toys just as much as any toy I’ve ever bought. Here are a couple of my better ideas for really easy-to-make homemade dog toys. The last one has actually become one of my Pointer’s all-time favorites.

1. Empty plastic jug or bottle.
Remove the cap and labels and then wash an empty plastic gallon or half-gallon milk jug. You could probably also use an empty 2-liter pop bottle. After it’s dry, toss it into the air and let your dog have fun chasing it around. Make sure you’re always there to supervise, because you don’t want your Pointer to chew the bottle or swallow any plastic. This is a great idea for a free, use-one-time-and-then-discard-it dog toy.

2. The same idea, but fill the jug with several dried beans or treats.
You can add to the fun by putting several dried beans inside the jug and then capping it. They’ll make an interesting noise as the jug moves around.

Or, use some small treats instead of the dried beans. Cut a hole in the side of the jug that’s just big enough to let the treats fall out while your Pointer plays with his toy. He might have so much fun that he’ll be entertained for hours, but again, make sure you’re always there to supervise.
