Things to Do Before Bringing Home a New Pointer Puppy

It’s hard to think of anything more exciting for a dog lover or a family with kids than the day you’re bringing home a new Pointer puppy. But, it’s important for you, your family and your home to all be prepared for your new family member. Thorough preparation will make his arrival easier and safer for everyone, including your new puppy.

Here are some things I think you should do before bringing your new Pointer puppy home:

  • Decide where you want your puppy to eat and sleep. Buy food and water bowls, a crate, toys, a collar and leash, a dog brush or comb and a nice, cozy dog bed.
  • If possible, choose a name so you can start using it right away.
  • Buy a good book on dog care and choose a vet. Make an appointment to see the vet as soon as possible after your Pointer pup’s arrival at your home.
  • If possible, buy a supply of the same food your puppy has been eating.
  • Puppy-proof your home to the extent possible. For example, relocate any power cords your puppy could get to.
  • Starting on the day of his arrival, take some time off work. A few days will do, but a week would be better. This will let him have company while he’s still getting used to you and his new surroundings. It will also let you get a good jump on the housetraining process.
